What is a Coven?

Updated: Mar 30

In modern pagan witchcraft, a coven is a sacred gathering of individuals who seek to connect and the divine. Through rituals such as Drawing Down the Moon and celebrating the Sabbats, they form a community of support and learning. Led by a High Priestess and High Priest, a coven is a family of like-minded individuals who work together to deepen their spiritual connections and knowledge of the craft.

Although the ideal number of members is believed to be thirteen, any group of at least three can be a coven. When a coven grows too large to be manageable, it may hive, but the bond between members remains strong. They refer to each other as brothers and sisters and share a deep sense of belonging.

The place at which they generally meet, known as a covenstead, is considered a sacred space where they can come together to perform rituals and connect with the divine. Covens is a beautiful example of how individuals can support each other in their spiritual journeys and form deep connections that transcend traditional boundaries.
